The Atmosphere:
The Gig is tucked in with the other businesses on Melrose Ave. but really sticks out with its huge marquee and blinking lights. A few posters and other promotional materials in glass displays hang along the outside where you might have to wait to get your tickets before going inside. Once you get your hand stamped you'll proceed past the door person, get your first drink and enjoy some music.
The right side of the club is the bar, literally. At the bar you can stake your claim to a seat and still be in comfortable view of the stage. As a matter of fact, there's really no bad spot in the club, unless you're in the bathroom.
If there's one thing that stands out about The Gig it's the level of comfort. The couches and plush bar stools are a small part of the Gig's appeal. The metal tables and soft walls (in the style you might find at the local movie theatre) make everything feel inviting.
We're surprised they don't serve food because their other location had (closed) some great stuff on the menu. However, with about half the space and half the seating, it seems like it might be more trouble than it's worth.
The bands that play are some of the best in LA. Most often the shows are well promoted and the place gets packed. It quickly becomes standing room only. The sound is good, the stage lighting is great and the anticipation level is held high just before they lift the curtain on the band.
What you should know:
The Gig is considered a showcasing venue, even by the club. You'll find bands that promote heavily by presenting themselves to the industry here. What does this mean for you? Some of the best unsigned bands at their best!
Parking Situation:
Parking shouldn't be a problem, but you will probably have to walk. Since the Gig is located on Melrose, walking shouldn't be a problem. The area is safe and there are small pay lots located in and around the area. Beware of the parking signs!
