Honeybreath @ 14 Below
SANTA MONICA, CA (April 18, 2005) – Honeybreath is a band whose existence has spanned almost ten years. Their sound is one of the most unique and haunting sounds in independent music today; haunting not for some twitch with a synthesizer or masterful production, but for sheer simplicity and skilled musicianship. Armed with a sound mostly described as The Cranberries meets Morrissey, Honeybreath enjoyed a successful night of music recently, playing for the first time at 14 Below in Santa Monica.
Singer/guitarist Chanell floated her softly sweet vocals over former Go Betty Go bassist and current Honeybreath guitarist Alex’s dark and mysterious musical melodies and bassist Eddie’s stern lines. Plagued by sound issues in their recent gigs, they seemed to have made it in the clear with a clean house mix and nice separation. Alex’s wall of sound does tend to overflow and overwhelm the other side of the stage with an onslaught of intricate sounds and effects from his symphonic strumming…but that is partly what makes their sound so unique.
Playing a 40 minute set to a near-full house at 14 Below, Chanell dazzled and delighted her audience with a double-punch of subtly strong vocals dancing delicately atop her flanking guitarists and while wizzing disarming smiles and captivating charm across an audience of returning fans and many new ones.
Manning the drums, Mark compliments their ominously positive sound with a simple selection of strong beats, rolls and symbols which punctuates Honeybreath’s musical menagerie of darkness and light.
On their myspace.com site, they describe themselves as “The weightless moments between bliss and despair. Sweet and consuming and uncomfortable…like breathing honey.” Their naturally poetic nature in which they describe their name and themselves can only lend the unfamiliar to gain a vision of the kind of music they perform and portray, which in and of itself, is inviting and soothing, while altogether a sliver mysterious and enchanting.
