The Uptown Rulers : The World According To
"The World According to…" The Uptown Rulers, may be the closest thing to Rage Against the Machine meets the Hip Hop genre, to be coined as Funk/Hop. The album starts out like a story book, announced like a WWF play by play… "in the Beginning there was light and dark and then came…" "A sound, that nobody was ready for… prepare your ears for that sound…"
The first song, "We're Taking Over," sets the vibe for what you can expect from the Uptown Rulers. The music is upbeat, funky and lays the groundwork for the lyrical style of lengthy catch phrases and straight forward hooks like "You can stand up, you can get down, It doesn't matter, we're taking over" and "We're ganna ride and there ain't no stopping, We're ganna crash and we can't turn around, got no life, looks like we're going down."
Musicianship can be summed up in one word FUNK, but the vibe us caught up in Hip Hop. The Waz's voice is mellow, sometimes too mellow, and the rapping is very even and deliberate. When The Waz sings, he sings with that old school funky ballad vibe that's infectious.
The bass and drums set everything up for The Uptown Rulers, keeping everything in line and focused. The grooves are mellow but really solid, leaving a lot of room for the guitar to lay down the melodies, but it's the guitar solos and the trumpet (yes I said trumpet) parts that really stand out.
This album will be well enjoyed by fans of the Hip Hop and Funk genres and those who like a touch of that live club vibe. I believe the group has a lot more to offer than is offered on this CD. They've got a fan sound that will win over and convert listeners.
